A former Buffalo Police Lieutenant will spend four months in prison for using excessive force when arresting four teenagers in 2009.

Gregory Kwiatkowski, 54, pleaded guilty to deprivation of rights under color of law.

The charge comes from an incident on Treehaven Road in May 2009, when Kwiatkowski responded to a vehicle that had been pulled over by Cheektowaga Police that was believed to be involved in a series of BB gun shootings.

Kwiatkowski and two other Buffalo officers who arrived later were accused of forcibly pushing the heads and upper torsos of four teenage suspects, all between the ages of 16 and 18, into a police vehicle.

The other officers were acquitted after a trial.

Kwiatkowski admitted to the use of force on the suspects, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. In addition to the four months in jail, he was sentenced to four months of home confinement and one year of probation.
