A retired Wyoming County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for killing a man on his property.

Joseph Mylniec, 60, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of 32-year-old Robert Irvine III earlier this year.

“I had to look at him lying in the casket. And because of Joe, it wasn’t the face I kissed goodbye days prior," Irvine's girlfriend, Christina King, said during the victim impact statements in court Wednesday. "It was reconstruction and makeup, damaged to the point where friends and family couldn’t properly say goodbye.”

Prosecutors said Mylniec shot Irvine four times after Irvine threatened to go forward about Mylniec’s “double life,” including allegations of sexual abuse.

“When a person becomes a police officer, they take an oath to serve and protect the community as positive role models,” King said, reading from a letter.

In court, Mylniec apologized to the victim’s family, but they did not appear receptive to his words.

“I am so sorry,” he said. “I know I can’t say anything, and I’m sorry.”

"It doesn’t bring him back,” the victim's sister, Kimberly Schroth, responded.

"And you’re right, I’m sorry,” Mylniec said.

Irvine leaves behind a 9-year-old daughter, who even knew Mylniec.

“She wants you to know she’s sorry she ever called you Grandpa Joe," Schroth said. "She truly hates you for what you did to her daddy.”

Family says a minimum of 15 years isn’t nearly enough.

“You should’ve gotten 25 to life in prison," Schroth said, reading a letter from her father. "I hope you rot in hell, and never get granted parole.”

Wyoming County District Attorney Donald O’Geen said he thinks Mylniec won’t see 15 years in prison.

"He’s going to see a significant larger sentence than that,” he said. “My hope is he will die in prison, that is my hope.”
