ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- A school resource officer will report to Orchard Park High School by September, and he or she will not only work to keep the school safe, but also to create a rapport with students.

The officer will be someone already employed by the village police department.

"It has to be the right officer that's going to be with those individuals, that's going to develop those relationships early on so if you see signs of a problem or psychological leaking, we can get them the help they need so it doesn't grow to a critical incident," said Orchard Park Police Chief Mark Pacholec.

"I don't think it matters what your zip code is. I believe students especially now are dealing with a lot of pressures," said Orchard Park Central School District Superintendent Matthew McGarrity.

State Senator Chris Jacobs announced $40,000 in state funding to make this move happen, and also an additional $35,000 for a new vehicle for the school resource officer already in place at Hamburg High School.
