BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Board of Education is now short a member.

Former Park District representative Dr. Catherine Flanagan-Priore resigned Wednesday after the board voted to replace Kaleida Health as the district's school nurse provider with Supplemental Health Care and Sun Belt Staffing.

Flanagan-Priore is a Kaleida Health employee and says she had concerns about the level of transparency surrounding the new provider's bid.

"When I learned that my own daughter's school nurse was not going to be able to be in her school any longer, I cried. I cried because my daughter has a medical condition. It's not terrible, it's not devastating, but her nurse knows the difference between 'Keira needs to talk to mommy for five minutes on the phone' and 'you need to come and get her, something's wrong,’” said Flanagan-Priore.

While school board President Dr. Barbara Seals Nevergold shared some of those same concerns Wednesday night, she says the resignation was still unexpected.

“It came as a complete surprise to everyone on the board,” said Nevergold.

The school board is now on the hunt for her replacement.

Over the next month they'll be putting out ads calling for eligible applicants, interviewing candidates and voting on an interim board member.

"They have to be a resident of the city of Buffalo, I believe, for three years, and a resident of the Park District for at least a year. And I think there is one other requirement, that they not have a felony conviction,” said Nevergold.

In the meantime, Kaleida Health is working to find jobs for all 77 displaced school nurses and fighting the board's decision.

"Through the city's RFP process, there's an official appeal and we are pursuing that as well as looking at our legal options,” said Kaleida Health Chief of Staff, Michael Hughes.

Flanagan-Priore's seat is officially opens up in summer 2019.
