BUFFALO, N.Y. — Bishop Richard Malone announced Tuesday the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo will sell his current residence at 77 Oakland Place.

He says 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Diocese of Buffalo’s Independent Reconciliation & Compensation Program to assist victims of sexual abuse by priests.

"We know we can, at least we hope we can, achieve significant resources from that that will help the reconciliation program and bring some healing to victims. That's the main thing, but I think it's also important that we, that I, be willing to give something up. It's an important thing that there be an element of sacrifice in this. We're serious about this," Malone said.

The residence was built in 1928, and sold to the Diocese in 1952. It has served as the home to six of Buffalo's bishops.

Malone will move to the former convent at St. Stanislaus Parish on Townsend Street.

While the bishop says he believes this will be a good step forward to help victims of abuse begin healing, he knows it's only part of the equation.

"What I want going forward after these troubles is for Catholic institutions to be the safest possible place for kids that there is, and that's my commitment," Malone said.

Malone says the Diocese has a full-time employee with an assistant devoted to safe environment training for children and adults.

He also ran through the current protocols if someone is accused of sexual abuse within the Diocese.

"Immediately the district attorney is notified, immediately the person is offered counseling assistance, immediately there is an outreach from our victim assistance coordinator and often Bishop Grosz, my auxiliary bishop, and we take it from there," Malone said.

In addition to the bishop's residence, the Diocese will also sell the Sheehan residence for retired priests on Linwood Avenue.

Proceeds from that sale will go to the Retired Diocesan Priests’ Medical Benefits Fund.

The priests there now will move to one of three other diocesan residents for retired priests in the area.
