NEWFANE, N.Y. -- More help is on its way to communities affected by this summer's devastating flooding along Lake Ontario.

Niagara County was one of six New York counties approved for FEMA aid by the Trump Administration Tuesday.

Newfane Town Supervisor Timothy Horanburg says he welcomes the news after the town's worst summer in his 30 years in office. Horanburg says they recently applied for nearly $63,000 in reimbursements from the state.

"We've had to itemize our manpower hours, our equipment that was used for the hours that they were used, all the pumps we used, and all of our infrastructure pumps we used for the sewer system and the time it was done, and any materials that we used had to be separated out for funding for reimbursement," Horanburg said.

Municipalities in Niagara County will be eligible for FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which provides up to 75 percent of funding for projects that can reduce loss of life or property.

The county is also eligible for FEMA's Public Assistance Program, which provides assistance with debris removal, emergency protective measures and permanent restoration of infrastructure.

Horanburg says there is some town-owned property that is still in need of repair.

"We have a wall along the beach down in Olcott by our shops, and that's been eroded behind the wall, and we haven't had a good look at the front of it yet. Plus, we've had some damage at our town marina from the high water," Horanburg said.

Niagara County Legislator John Syracuse says the county has applied for about $300,000 in reimbursements from the state since the flooding issues began in May. He thanked Congressman Chris Collins for help in securing this round of federal funding.

"Congressman Collins' Office has been really integral in this whole process. He's been as frustrated as we have been with the lake levels, and he's been carrying this message forward in the capital, and today was great news," Syracuse said.

Back in July, Gov. Cuomo signed a $45 million relief package for communities affected by the flooding, including up to $15 million in grants for small businesses.

Empire State Development will have a meeting from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Niagara County Community College (Room E116) for information on applying for the funding.

Syracuse says the Cuomo administration has also done a great job in looking out for the affected communities.

"It's just been a great effort put forth by both Republicans and Democrats, something that's refreshing, I'm sure, to the American people, and this is how it's supposed to work," Syracuse said.
