SOUTH WALES, N.Y. — A car crash at the intersection of Route 400 and Route 16 in South Wales killed one woman early Friday.

East Aurora Police believe a black Chevrolet sedan failed to obey a stop sign as a white van drove northbound on Rote 16, resulting in a T-bone accident.

Corrine Closson, 26, of East Aurora was identified as the driver of the black Chevrolet. Police pronounced her dead at the intersection.

A passenger in Closson’s car, along with the driver of the white van, were treated for minor injuries and later released, police said.

East Aurora Police Lieutenant Patrick Welch said the intersection is confusing, which might be why police are called to an average of six crashes there each year.

“A lot of people are coming straight down this way and as soon as they get on the highway they think ‘Alright 65 (MPH),  time to jump it,’” said South Wales resident Chase Szafnicki.  “A lot of people aren’t going the 40 that they’re supposed to at the beginning of it... a lot of bad stuff happens.”

The investigation into the crash was still underway Friday afternoon by the East Aurora Police Department and the Erie County Sheriff's Office.
