BUFFALO, N.Y. -- One group in Western New York is using sports to explore what comes after a cancer diagnosis.

Called ‘We Can Row Buffalo,’ the crew team is healing the physical and emotional scars that come with a cancer battle.

It was founded eight years ago by two breast cancer survivors and is open to women of all ages with any cancer diagnosis.

Many of the members are actually new to the grueling sport, but say the growing pains are nothing when compared to what they've already been through.

"Once you get through the first part, everything is worth doing. It's been 23 years for me, when I was diagnosed. And it's just once you can beat that demon down, why not? Challenges don't seem that much of a challenge anymore,” said Cathy Scirto.

Organizers say the team is currently looking forward to fall, when they'll be able to keep training and store their equipment indoors at the Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association's new boathouse and rowing facility.
