NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- A frightening and convoluted night in Niagara Falls ended with Jose Hewitt dead. He was 59.
"He was an innocent bystander in a messed up situation and it should've never happened, ever, to nobody," said Keisha Portugese, Hewitt's neighbor of 10 years.
Hewitt died of a heart attack Wednesday after police said he was beaten in the doorway of his Pine Avenue apartment building. Two suspects, Shequan Herbert and Stephanie Raymond, both of Niagara Falls, have been arrested and charged with murder 2nd.
Investigators also confirmed that a child was in the back of the getaway car Raymond allegedly drove. That child is safe and is back with their parents.
Detectives say they're still gathering evidence against a 3rd suspect but they do expect to file charges in the near future.
