UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica was the site Saturday of both a counter-inaugural rally, in the spirit of the Women's March on Washington, and a teach-in.

The rally took place in front of the Utica State Office Building, with protesters advocating for several issues, including women's rights, equality, and the desire for kindness and unity. Jessica Wilk says the support so far is encouraging.

"It's helping us with the feelings of grief that we have to have all this solidarity and all this positive energy around us today," Wilk said.

Further down Genesee Street, community groups invited the public to look closely at President Donald Trump's agenda and rally for a progressive future. The event featured speakers, workshops, and live music.

Paul Lomeo, an organizer, says everyone here stands determined to make their voices heard.

"We'll be going forward with other events of addressing different issues as they come along. We want this to be a long term, ongoing, and very strong and unified force," Lomeo said.
