BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Hundreds of local runners are helping to fight Alzheimer's disease by honoring a late Buffalo Mayor.

Crowds of people hit the streets near Coca-Cola Field Sunday for the "Run Jimmy Run" 5K.

The run was started in memory of Jimmy Griffin, the Queen City's longest serving mayor.

Almost 10 years ago, Griffin died after fighting a rare and aggressive form of dementia.

The proceeds from today's run go to the Western New York Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

"This was his dream, to have people downtown, in the city he loved, seeing how so much has changed, in this ball park, which was so important to him and just enjoying themselves, spending time with family and staying in shape," Griffin's daughter Maureen Maureen Thomczak said.

The race has helped raise more than $48,000 over the past three years.
