DEWITT, N.Y. -- A non-profit group is looking to promote the game of golf and a better lifestyle for kids.
Registration is now open for children to participate in the First Tee of Syracuse program.
The group was launched a few years ago and is getting ready for its third year in DeWitt.
Members recently purchased the former Butternut Creek Golf Course in DeWitt and now use the course as its home headquarters.
In addition to golf, the program teaches kids nine core values including confidence, integrity, courtesy, and sportsmanship.
"The fact that we're interjecting things like respect and perseverance, I think it really gives them an idea, that like oh, we're not just here to swing clubs but we're also learning life skills,” said Alissa DeBie, First Tee of Syracuse coach.
"They're acquiring we hope a much deeper value system and that's why I think parents would want their children in it," said Jim Wiggins, First Tee of Syracuse Program director.
Local coaches are encouraging kids between seven and 18 to sign up for a six week program which will begin June 28.
