After a night of drinking with her mother led to a deadly hit-and-run crash last year, Ashley Sawicki is now headed to jail. Time Warner Cable News reporter Kaitlyn Lionti tells us what the victim's family had to say before she was sentenced.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sam Martello expressed a range of emotions Tuesday, while speaking to the woman who killed his wife. Ashley Sawicki, 22, pleaded guilty in August to leaving the scene of an incident resulting in the death of Jennifer Martello on Big Tree Road in Hamburg in July of 2014.

"Look at the person you killed. And believe me, it's not killed, it's murdered because you drove away," said Martello, showing Sawicki a picture of his wife.

He said his heart was ripped out seeing his wife on life support.

"She has a little girl. Do you see her little girl? My little girl? I have to raise her and tell her what happened to her mommy someday," said Martello.

That's not the only impact Martello said Sawicki has had on his life. He hasn't had custody of his daughter for almost 18 months because the blame initially fell on him.

"I've had my life robbed from me. At the wake, there was a picture of my wife and my daughter and not me, because I was the one being accused," said Martello.

Despite it all, he said he doesn't want Sawicki's life to be ruined.

"You can make a difference, you can go and talk in high schools and talk about drinking and driving. Your life's not over. I'm saying this with all sincerity, I really, genuinely forgive you," said Martello.

However, his father-in-law feels differently.

"Forgiving would be so easy, so much easier than hanging on to the anger that I have. But you left my daughter laying there, and I can't forgive that," said Larry Spillman, Jennifer's father.

The prosecutor said the investigation revealed Sawicki and her mother were drinking at multiple bars that night, and she drove because her mother was too intoxicated.

"Your mother should be standing right next to you as far as I'm concerned. And she shouldn't even be called a mother," said Spillman.

After that, the judge called Sawicki's mother to come stand next to her. When asked if she had anything to say, Sawicki's mother said they both made a huge mistake.

"I can tell by the look on your face that you have no remorse. Ashley does, she'll go forward, but you, I don't know about," said Erie County Court Judge Sheila DiTullio.

Through many tears, Sawicki apologized to Martello's family.

"I just can't explain how sorry I really am to every single one of you that is affected by my actions. I will have this weight on my shoulder for the rest of my life," said Sawicki.

Sawicki was sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation and will have her license revoked. She's also required to speak to high school and college students about the consequences of drinking and driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
