POTSDAM N.Y. -- Information is still limited coming out of Potsdam, where two Clarkson students were killed on Thursday. The man and woman have been publicly identified as Yahzen Jiang, 25, of China and Tian Ma, 31, also of China.
Potsdam Police found Ma on top of Jiang, stabbing both her and himself. Ma was fatally shot by Officer Matthew Seymor, an 11-year veteran of the department, after Ma refused to put down the knife.
On campus, many students were just learning about the incident Friday. The University sent out a notification on Thursday, but due to classes being in session and the incident occurring off campus, it hadn't quite hit home yet for everyone.
The students who are aware of what happened say they're shocked that a stabbing would happen in Potsdam.
"I mean, I feel pretty safe with the authorities letting us know about this," Clarkson University sophomore Hunter Secor said. "At least Clarkson informed us right away about this, so that's good."
St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain will present the findings of the State Police and the medical examiner’s office investigation for an independent review of the shooting to provide transparency to the public that the officer’s actions were justifiable.
