CROSS LAKE, N.Y. -- When the storm hit, they could only see rain pounding their windows.

"The wind picked up, a thunderstorm came in, it started hailing and the next thing you know the leaves just started coming off the trees," said Scott Nixon, owner of Cross Lake Park Campground.

Nixon says eight trailers in the park are a total loss.

The office's roof was torn away - and he says about 60 people were in the park during the storm. No one was injured. Now, campers are left to pick up the pieces.

Jim Smith's camper was knocked on its side by the storm. Smith says he's thankful the storm hit Tuesday, when fewer people were around.

"On a weekend, we would have been here, our grandchildren would have been with us," said Smith. "If it had been on a weekend, it would have probably been fatalities."

Smith's next door neighbor at camp, Jeff Irwin, was home in his trailer when the storm came down.

"My trailer started to lift up, and it was ready to tip over," said Irwin.

It stayed stable. But seconds later, the wind threw Jim Smith's trailer into Irwin's.

"I'm just thankful to be alive today," said Irwin.

Now the campers play a waiting game and remain optimistic.

"Once the insurance company takes care of it and does whatever they need to do, we can get it out of here and just replace it with another unit," said Smith. "Not much we can do. Just move forward."

The campground's owner estimates it will take a month or so to clear away all the fallen trees, and the rest of the damage.
