A teen who spent much of the past year undergoing chemotherapy and radiation says a Make-a-Wish trip helped raise her spirits during that difficult time. Elizabeth Jeneault shares the story of her trip and how she feels to now be in remission.
WEEDSPORT, N.Y. -- It was last September when Sydney Walewski was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. After that, her life changed.
"I was out of school the days I was getting IV chemo and maybe the day after, but I tried to be in school as much as I could because I didn't want to miss anything," said Walewski.
Walewski and her family have long helped other kids' wishes come true. That's why she never envisioned herself being on the non-profit's receiving end.
"It was weird to be on the other side," said Walewski.
But she's glad doctors encouraged her to apply. That's because she and her family were able to fly out to Hollywood to meet her favorite makeup and style YouTube personality, Amanda Steele. A trip she says she'll forever be grateful for.
"It was great seeing her behind the scenes and her, like, in her element with her makeup done and choosing her outfits," said Walewski.
The family says the experience has inspired them to continue supporting Make-a-Wish to the fullest and to keep holding tournaments to benefit the organization at their Weedsport golf course.
"Matter of fact, we have volunteered to help Make-a-Wish with anything they need," said Tina Walewski, Sydney's mom. "To be on the giving end again."
Walewski has been in remission for about four months now. She says she's feeling strong and is remaining positive.
"It's life, if it happens you just have to go for it and fight it as best as you can and just be happy that I'm still here," said Walewski.
