BUFFALO, N.Y. -- If you walk, bike or drive in LaSalle Park, you might consider the Rough Road signs an understatement.

"They're like land mines, you know? You've got to watch where you pedal," said Eric Miller, Buffalo resident.

That's why the City of Buffalo is continuing work to the park with the third phase of infrastructure improvements. The plan includes defining parking spots, creating a designated bike lane and improving connectivity to the Shoreline trail. It also calls for repaving more of D. A. R. drive and possibly Amvets Drive, as well as narrowing both to encourage drivers to follow the speed limit.

"My main issue is this right here where we are right now, with the kids playing and the people speeding around this park. It's a daily occurrence, upwards of 60 miles an hour," said Jack Brodzik, Buffalo resident.

Brian Germann, a Buffalo resident, wants the city to take things further and eliminate driving in most of the park.

"You shouldn't drive near a playground. We just learned because of the incident near Delaware Park, and here, they're doing the same thing," Germann said.

Residents we spoke with said they'd also like to see more police patrols in LaSalle Park, which is open all the time for fishing purposes.

"I'm sorry, at 3 in the morning, if there's a car in front of my condo, they're not fishing," Germann said. "There's prostitution activities, there's littering. I actually found used hypodermic needles in the playground."

"Last night, I was awakened by a concert at 3 in the morning, somebody commandeered the band shell, had all the lights on and the sound system going," said Brodzik.

The city is hosting a public meeting Tuesday night to present its proposal for LaSalle Park, which includes changes based on the first meeting last month. The meeting is from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Niagara Branch of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library.
