The season's just started and the Mets are already grappling with some bad news.

Closer Jenrry Mejia has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Mejia is entering his fifth season with the Mets.

He led the team in saves last season with 28.

His suspension is effective immediately, and he released a statement through the players' union, saying he knows the rules and accepts his punishment, but he has no idea how a banned substance ended up in his system.

In their statement, the Mets say: "We were disappointed when informed of Jenrry's suspension for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. We fully support MLB's policy toward eliminating performance enhancing substances from the sport.  As per the Joint Drug Program, we will have no further comment on this suspension."
