As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact small businesses around the country, bars are working to navigate how to effectively open.

“Bar Rescue” Host Jon Taffer joined Spectrum News to discuss what he believes is the biggest mistake bar operators are making right now amid the pandemic.

Taffer said operators must make a decision on how to effectively spend their resources during this time. Operators have some important options to weigh:

Should they spend their resources now, or turn the lights off and hold those resources for when the marketplace comes back?

“You know I wouldn’t open a restaurant the week of a hurricane coming in Florida. I’m would say the market is disrupted, I’m going to hold my resources back, (and) I’m going to wait….,” said Taffer. “So, that I think is where many restaurateurs and bar operators are making a mistake. I think they should be holding back their resources. If they’re not going to make money and you’re bleeding, then cut a deal with the landlord, go dormant, figure out a way to survive through this, so that when the market disruption ends, you can come back to the marketplace.”

Taffer said he thinks too many people are spending their resources, sustaining themselves for a losing scenario rather than holding those resources back for a winning one.
