The Buffalo Association of Black Journalists inaugural Black film series is now underway.

A preview screening of Givers of Death was held at Dark-Alley Drive in on Hertel Avenue Friday night.

It's the product of proud Buffalo native Addison Henderson and was filmed right here in Western New York last summer.

Henderson spoke about his new movie but also shared that he is collaborating with LeRoi Johnson on a seven-episode mini-series about the life of Rick James.

“I had an idea to do this story 15 years ago and we would just talk about his life, talk about his brother Rick James's life, and a lot of people have tried to do the Rick James story but our angle was let's do a story about both of you and we call it the brother's keeper,” said Henderson. “Show the side the divergent sides and how they came together to create something magnificent and do something for the city that was never done.”

They're hoping a year from now, they will be in pre-production of the series and will be hiring local actors.

The film recently won various awards including best screenplay at the American black filmmakers festival.

The film will premiere September 24th at the Transit Drive in. It also featured multiple Western New Yorkers including Mayor Byron Brown.
