HAMBURG, N.Y. -- It may be the last day of the Erie County Fair. but the action is far from over. Sunday marks the first time an event from the State Fair is being held right here in Western New York.
For regular fair goers or repeat visitors this year, it can be easy to feel like they've seen and done it all, but today, they can experience a first: the Statewide Demolition Derby Championship.
This is the first time the event is being held at the Hamburg Fairgrounds.
Every county fair can send three drivers to compete; a four cylinder, six cylinder, and eight cylinder. There are qualifying and championship events and school bus championships will also be today.
Organizers say because they're a little farther west this year, they're expecting 50-70 competitors compared to the normal 100.
However, that doesn't mean the derby will be any less action packed.
"The events are always different, the action's always different," said Jay Milligan, JM Productions President. "There could be anything from cars tipping over, fires on the race track, and of course, lots of smashing, crashing action, and that's what everyone loves to see."
150 cars have already been wrecked so far at the fair, but if you want to see a couple more crushed, you can check out the State Championships at 3:00 p.m. at the Gusto Grandstand.
