BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo Common Council member wants to bring the D.A.R.E. program back to city schools. The drug and alcohol use prevention program was discontinued in 2009 after being around for more than 25 years.
There is now a revamped version called D.A.R.E. Keepin' it Real.
The program features 10- to 45-minute lessons for students, teaching them to stay away from drugs and alcohol and how to form good relationships with local law enforcement.
"Instead of having the sirens on in a frantic situation, we were in a classroom and having an opportunity to talk to the officer and just realize they are real people and doing their job as well," said Councilmember Bryan Bollman.
Bollman will talk more about bringing D.A.R.E. Keepin' it Real into Buffalo Public Schools during the council's education committee meeting on Tuesday.
