A 13-year-old girl injured in a Thursday morning fire on Leroy Avenue in Buffalo was taken to the hospital.

On Friday, the family of Serenity Austin gave an update on the 13-year-old's condition. A family member said the girl suffered mainly from smoke inhalation, and not burns.

"We just thank God for our grand-daughter because it could've been a lot [worse]," said Katrina Thomas, Serenity's grandmother.

Fire officials said the fire is believed to have started in a back bedroom, on the second floor.

Austin's father told Spectrum News he recently talked about a fire plan with his daughter.

"We talked about it — maybe a week ago before this even happened, and it’s crazy," said Terrence Austin.

The Red Cross is assisting four other people, three of which were able to get out of the burning house on their own and two who were rescued from the second floor, including the injured girl.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but officials believe it was accidental.

Officials said the same firefighters also responded to a fire on Shirley Avenue on December 21 that killed three people.

The family told Spectrum News they are aware of a GoFundMe being set up to benefit them, but they have no ties to whoever created it.

They say a fundraiser is in the works for Serenity at Public School 61. Details will be provided at a later date.
