The Wyoming County Sheriff spoke publicly Monday for the first time since a man attacked him along a roadside last week.

Sheriff Gregory Rudolph returned home from the hospital just hours after he survived an attack, but we have learned little about what one law enforcement official called the true hand-to-hand combat that led to his injuries.

Investigators say 48-year-old Lynn Hall used his car to flag down Sheriff Rudolph Tuesday morning. Rudolph was on his way to work to take part in a what has become a shift of road patrol duty, a rare practice for a sheriff that Rudolph conducts as a way to keep his fingers on the pulse of his department.

When Hall stopped the sheriff off route 238 in the town of Attica, police say Hall attacked Rudolph, pulled a knife on him and tried to grab the sheriff's firearm. Two newspaper delivery people passing by the scene stopped and pulled the two apart.

Hall remains in jail without bail on an attempted murder count as well as criminal possession of a weapon and attempted assault. State police say hall had two guns of his own in his vehicle, including an AR-15 rifle.

Hall has a February court date on the schedule his defense attorney Wyoming County Public Defender Adam cook attended the sheriff’s news conference. He had no comment on the matter.

The sheriff was not injured by the knife and he suffered minor injuries during the attack.

It is the second time in his career with the Wyoming County Sheriff's Office that Rudolph was injured in the line of duty. Twelve years ago, Rudolph, then a deputy, was shot in the shoulder and face during a standoff.

Hall was denied a gun permit the day before the sheriff was attacked, yet had the two firearms in his vehicle.
