Heath Farwell doesn't have much of a coaching background, but it's easy to tell what he's bringing to Bills special teams.

"We decided to go with the young guy with great energy,” said head coach Sean McDermott.

"Energy and effort, that's the first thing I'm going to look at every time I turn the tape on,” said Farwell.

"I liked the energy he brought to the interview,” said McDermott.

"That's the number one thing, energy and effort, strain. It's just you got to show that passion. That's what special teams is about,” said Farwell.

Farwell's been an assistant special teams coach for three years after being a Pro Bowler and Super Bowl captain on that side as a player.

"With that we take a little bit of a leap of faith that he's going to continue to grow and learn and in this case we can grow our own,” said McDermott.

Farwell wouldn't get into what he thinks about the group he's inheriting, but rather looking ahead at what it can do for the team as a whole.

“It's the heartbeat. I think there's so many guys. Special teams is made up of offensive and defensive guys, so getting them all out there working together, it's the unit of the whole team that works together,” said Farwell.

The other Bills staff addition is with the offensive line, where, like Farwell, Bobby Johnson's only been an assistant.

"Bobby's been around the league a long time. He's coached the offensive line in college. Has been an assistant o-line coach in the league. Coached tight ends in the league as well and a lot of times those positions are connected, the tight end position and o-line position. And Bobby's a student of the game and embraces the growth mindset. You spend five minutes with him and you're able to connect rather quickly on what type of guy he is and the type of teacher he is,” said McDermott.

One spot still open on McDermott's staff is wide receivers coach. McDermott says he's still in the process of looking around, though did give high praise to Chad Hall, who's been an assistant with the wideouts for two years and isn't out of the running for a possible promotion.
