Time Warner Cable News highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment "App Wrap."

Dear Carnegie Hall

It’s apparently becoming something of a trend as two of the most popular places to visit in the Big Apple recently unveiled augmented reality projects in order to better engage visitors.

The first, Carnegie Hall, in celebration of its 125th anniversary, has started a program called “Dear Carnegie Hall.” As part of it, the performance center has unveiled 12 postcards; real ones they are giving out to concertgoers, digital ones online for anyone to see and use.

You just launch the Dear Carnegie Hall app on your mobile device, point it at the postcard, and it comes to life with animations, historic photos, under which you’ll hear a story narrated by someone connected to Carnegie Hall, whether it’s a performer, an employee, or even devoted audience members.

The app even lets you record your own story for others to see.  Dear Carnegie Hall is a free app for iOS and Android devices.

MicroRangers

The American Museum of Natural History is launching an augmented reality game aimed at getting young visitors more in tune with the exhibits.

Called Microrangers, kids get a little token, point their phone at it, and up pops characters who give them missions, nine of them, aimed at protecting biodiversity.

As part of the games, players will need to search for objects in exhibits, take pictures, help save organisms that’ll appear all around them.

The museum says the game is best played with two to six players.

Microrangers, is a free app for iOS and Android devices. Museumgoers can get that coin free or just print one at home via the museum’s website
