BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- State Sen. Fred Akshar told Spectrum News that he has taken his name off the lieutenant governor short list to join Republican candidate Marcus Molinaro's ticket.

Akshar said in an interview Monday morning that he told Molinaro's camp that he would be a better advocate for him and the 52nd Senate District by continuing to serve in the state's upper chamber, representing Broome, Chenango and Tioga counties.

Akshar, who said he was humbled to be mentioned as a possible lieutenant governor candidate, faces re-election this year.

"There is much more work to be done," said Akshar, who has twice won election, replacing longtime senator, Thomas Libous.

Spectrum News will have more later on this developing story.
