BUFFALO, N.Y. — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday announced his plan to introduce the Affordable Insulin Now Act to the Senate.

The bill would require insurance plans nationwide to cap out-of-pocket costs at $35 — a steep decrease from the hundreds of dollars people pay now.

Doctors backing the bill said people who cannot afford the drug may resort to rationing it, which can cause complications or death.

"This bill would ensure once and for all that families who have someone who has diabetes don't have to make the impossible decision of putting food on the table or getting the drug you need," Schumer said at a press conference at the University at Buffalo.

Schumer said he plans to introduce the bipartisan bill in March.
