Universities and businesses continue to show their creativity in making personal protective equipment.

Otsego Northern Catskills BOCES, SUNY Delhi, and Binghamton University have teamed up to help a local business create scuba face masks.

"I do scuba diving myself and then I started seeing they were using them in Italy and some doctors had developed adaptations for them," said Hans Hass, Owner of Alpine Roofing.

Hans Hass purchased 2,500 scuba masks. Then, he reached out to local educators for help, creating the 3D printed adapter.

"So all we're doing is making a step between the mask and the filter itself," said Nils Anderson, a professor at ONC BOCES.

Hass already gave away 100 of these masks to healthcare workers he knows. And now, three local hospitals are testing it out - UHS, Bassett Healthcare and Fox.

"A lot of doctors don't like the face shields because they fog up. But these are actually designed to keep the moisture coming out of your nose and mask in this area of the mask so it doesn't fog up," explained Hass.

With similar masks already approved across the world, the process is moving forward quickly.

"I made it so it fits the best way I think it can fit on there, which I think is pretty tough," added Dennis Aikens, SUNY Delhi Instructor of Mechatronics.

Benson Chan of Binghamton University is also getting in on the creating, helping make the 3D printed adapters.

"Everyone's trying to help. Everyone's trying to say, what can I do to help us get through this situation," said Chan.
