Lately, the mail trucks that come to the Cayuga Nursing and Rehabilitation Center have been bringing greetings from children, letting them know that someone still cares.

“They absolutely, just absolutely love it," said Kevin Dean, with Cayuga Nursing and Rehab Center.

Jokes, drawings, and photos inside cards; signed, sealed, and delivered, because of a competition; dreamed up by Dean and his son.

“Myself and my 10-year-old because he was asking what he could do to help the people where I work," said Dean.

Whichever class sends in the most cards, will get a pizza party when schools reopen. The center is keeping the elderly safe, by isolating mail for 96 hours.

“According to both the CDC and the United States postal service that is plenty of time, they actually told us there is nothing to worry about with the mail. But it was our precaution that we would hold it for 96 hours," said Dean.

Each resident’s TV having access to a special channel, showing photos and videos sent in by the community. Even band students are chiming in with videos.

“But it's very important to keep our residents engaged with their families. The isolation is devastating for the elderly population. So we came up with this idea of doing window visits," said Dean.

“They’ve been kind enough to let me visit her at the window every day," said Terry Greer, from Ithaca.

Terry brings her dog Gingersnap to wave through the window, to their friend Beverly.

“But as soon as I say hi she says where’s Gingersnap, where’s Gingersnap, so I know she loves the dog as well," said Greer.

Keeping alive a two decades long friendship, that began at a yoga class.

“I’m like a fixture at this window. And she looks forward to it and most days she remembers I was here," said Greer.
