With the holidays just around the corner, Binghamton High School hosted a tree lighting ceremony, but it carries a more somber message than most.

The group Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) lit their holiday tree to remind everyone to drive safely. The tree lighting has been a tradition for nearly three decades, since a teacher lost her daughter to a drunk driver.

Along with the lighting, ribbons were tied to a nearby tree to honor the lives of two students who died recently.

Yellow ribbons were for Harper Stantz who was killed by a drugged driver in March, and teal ribbons for Maddie Shaw who lost a battle with cancer earlier this month.

"It's great to really see everyone come together,” said SADD member Ainsley George. “Just for everyone to come out in the community, I think it's impacted everyone in a different sort of way. So, just for all of us to come together is really nice to kind of just cope with it."

The tree only has white bulbs, but they will be replaced with a red one if someone is killed by a drunk driver in Broome County. They haven't had to change a bulb since the tradition began.
