More than $1 million is headed for Binghamton’s police and fire departments.

Some will go toward renovations at the headquarters but about $900,000 will be used to purchase new vehicles including four new police cars, five new first-response medical vehicles and a new fire engine,

Binghamton Mayor Rich David says investing in safety is his priority.

"Residents and investors and developers and business owners and families don't want to live in areas that are unsafe,” said David. “Nobody would choose to live in an area, or in a community, that's unsafe."

Legislation for the new vehicles went to city councilors last night. They'll vote in two weeks.
