Watkins Glen is out, but Vernon Downs may be in as the casino hotel submitted a permit to host Woodstock 50.

"I think it's an opportunity and I'm pleased to see the local officials, the town as well as the owner of the track are interested and are having conversations and discussions," said Joseph Griffo, (R) State Senate - Utica.

Many neighboring residents and business are not quite sold on playing host.

"Quite frankly I think it would devastate this small town. It's not nearly big enough. You're talking about a town of 800 people. We don't have parking. We don't have facilities," said David Stirpe, Dibbles Inn Owner.

Griffo said besides the household name and commemorative year, the festival would be on a smaller scale.

"A lot of things have to be worked out as truly what this is going to look like,” said Griffo. “It's not going to be a traditional festival that was a multi-day camping experience, all of that. I'm not sure what they envision, but I see this more like some of the modern day concerts where you have a one or two-day schedule.”

Griffo was Mayor during Woodstock 99 in Rome. He says overall it was a success, despite locals remembering a much different scene.

"They looted businesses and burned down trucks and trailers and set vehicles on fire. It was pure chaos. In fact, Rome I know has spoken up to say it's never anything they want to do again. This is a promoter trying to make money and doesn't care what he's going to leave in the aftermath," said Stirpe.

"When you look back, sometimes there's more to this and you start evaluating what went right and what went wrong and you genuinely reflect accordingly," said Griffo.

If the plan goes through, Vernon Downs has until August 16th to pull it off.
