A man is in custody following a bizarre manhunt that ended with him being captured naked inside a chicken coop in Kirkwood.

New York State Police said it started when John Mehne, 25, crashed a stolen car into a guardrail on Interstate 81 in Kirkwood near the Pennsylvania border Tuesday morning.

Mehne allegedly tried to jump into the back of a pickup truck before fleeing the highway on foot.

Authorities eventually learned that someone saw him hiding inside a chicken coop on Duell Road in Kirkwood.

When confronted, the man said he was killing chickens then picked up an ax and chased the homeowner.

Police said he then stole an ATV and drove about two miles to Springer Road, where he broke into a home and killed a dog. He was then found hiding naked in a different chicken coop on that road.

Mehne was taken into custody and treated for a dog bite he got while being arrested.

He was charged with a number of felonies, including burglary, robbery and aggravated cruelty to animals.
