A Southern Tier dog breeder and trainer partner up to save lives.

Crime stats show that tens of thousands of people go missing each year. Frequently helping in the search is man’s best friend.

That’s where John Bellocchio comes in with his dog, who he trained on search and rescue. The former school administrator hopes to continue his lessons.

“This is a service that is so much in need both for paid law-enforcement and for volunteer groups,” Bellocchio said.

Bellocchio has partnered with Hidden Pond Labradors to start a search and rescue academy. Dogs that can track are needed now more than ever, as they can help find anyone lost in wooded areas.

“For a long time this has been my passion and I was looking for a kennel to work with that would be willing to work with me to breed Labrador Retrievers,” Bellocchio said.

“John contacted me and said, hey listen, I’m interested in having a business of search and rescue dogs,” said David Cortland, Hidden Pond Labradors owner.

Seamus' task Friday was to demonstrate how effective search and rescue can be. He found his business partner in less than 10 minutes.

Most law enforcement dogs are trained for short tracking; like trying to find an escaped prisoner. But when it comes to a missing loved one, experts say it could take days. American style labs are used for long searches.

“I think it’s a nice thing for our kennel to do because it has that, you know you really could save someone’s life,” said Cortland.

Like Seamus, they’re getting their lesson plan ready.

“We are now getting off the ground with the hope of having a litter ready in the next few months,” said Bellocchio.

With a litter of up to eight, the academy could be full of students looking to save a life.
