A Steuben County man who killed a state trooper more than 30-years ago has died in prison.

The State Department of Corrections confirms that Joseph Comfort died at Mohawk Correctional Facility Monday. Comfort and his brother, Larry, were both convicted of killing State Police Investigator Robert Van Hall in front of a Corning car wash in 1980.

Van Hall's partner, investigator William Gorenflo, was also seriously injured. Comfort began serving his 33-years-to-life sentence in April of 1982.

He was 71-years-old.
