The mayor of the Village of Horseheads abruptly resigned earlier this week, and is now saying it was because of her effectiveness in the role.

“The time for me was to step down because it was obvious to me that if I stayed on, stayed as mayor and also acting manager than we would never have accomplished anything. I really hate to see the forward movement end," Louise McIntosh said, when reached by phone.

McIntosh had served as the mayor since 2015, but stepped down following an executive session earlier this week.

McIntosh says she made the decision with the interests of the village in mind, but some board members did not support the move. She says she is proud of her work, especially the economic development, helping the fire department secure a new truck and making Westinghouse Road a little safer.

Robert Maloney, the deputy mayor and a village trustee, will assume mayoral duties.
