State Senator Fred Akshar is trying to get a feel for public opinion about a highly controversial bill proposing that anyone applying for a pistol permit submit their social media usernames and passwords.

Applicants would also have to consent to a three-year search of their browser histories.

The idea was proposed by a Brooklyn senator, but Akshar is looking for local input on the topic. He has posted a survey on his Twitter page.

There is also one on his New York State Senate website for anyone who wishes to be heard.
