KIRKWOOD, N.Y. -- The recovery process continues in communities throughout the Southern Tier following last week's flash floods.

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney was in Kirkwood Wednesday to check out some of the damage.

Broome County officials say the county and the state are trying to get a federal declaration to secure FEMA disaster funding, because there are a lot of homes, businesses and roads damaged by the storms.

The cost of the destruction is still being calculated.

"If the president is serious about rebuilding the infrastructure of America -- it needs to start with a place like this because we've seen some of the largest losses in the nation. And we're the place where you need to start to bring us back, so we can grow again,” Tenney said.

Tenney is running for reelection against Democrat Anthony Brindisi.
