The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office is still warning people looking to go out on the water after heavy rainfall this week.

They’re warning boaters to slow down as excessive rain has caused debris to run off into area lakes.

They call it debris fields and they can do serious damage to a boat. Rain has caused branches to float down waterways and end up in Seneca Lake.

Speeding over these debris fields could cause major damage. The problem is the debris at the surface could be misleading, as it could be a lot bigger and sturdier under the water’s surface.

They said it can scrape and dent hulls. But also do damage to the boats propeller leaving people stranded. In some cases they can even causing the boat to take on water.

The rain even forced one boat touring business to shut down for a couple days. The captain said not everyone is taking the warning seriously.

"We've seen some very good sized trees out there and at the same time we're seeing power boats zoom around and we're thinking geez these guys should be more aware. So definitely it is good to put caution out there - because there is a lot of stuff - we saw some tires floating out there," said Bill Holgate, Schnooner “True Love” captain.

The Schuyler County Sheriff says now is also a critical time for the advisory. A busy tourist season is expected with NASCAR coming to Watkins Glen next weekend and the Phish concert in a couple weeks.

Cayuta Lake also has an advisory in place. Water levels are high and are threatening some docks and properties.
