ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Neighbors in Elmira are finally getting answers to progress on cleanup efforts at the high school.

State DEC and health official invited people to an information session Thursday.

They say a major cleanup is expected to start fairly soon. The company Unisys is set to remove a large amount of soil under a parking lot.

DEC officials say there is little risk to the public. But that isn't satisfying everyone.

Chemung County passed a resolution demanding the cleanup be expedited.

“We’ve got a lot of actions that are underway and we’re also hoping to expedite a number of those actions on this site in as well here tonight so we hope that it will give them all the information they need to feel comfortable and confident that the school is safe,” said Sean Mahar, a DEC spokesperson.

A survey of the football field is also expected to be finished with work starting next summer.
