ELMIRA, N.Y. -- At a time when the world is full of unrest, Christians came together to celebrate Palm Sunday.

Dozens packed into First Presbyterian Church of Elmira where palms were given to churchgoers, representing Jesus' arrival into Jerusalem.

According to the scriptures, Jesus rode in on a donkey and towns people honored him with palm branches. Those branches have been a long time symbol of peace and victory.

Church officials also say Palm Sunday is a time to bring people together, marking new birth and the chance to start again.

Christians will continue to celebrate the week that leads to Easter Sunday with special services on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
