Dozens of students and parents in the Monticello School District got a chance to learn about future career opportunities, including what's to come at the Montreign Casino. Time Warner Cable News' Jackson Wang has more.
MONTICELLO, N.Y. -- It takes less than 10 minutes to drive from the entrance road of the future Montreign Resort Casino to Monticello High School.
It's the closest school to the casino, which will deliver 2,400 jobs to the area. And casino officials want to make sure students and parents understand what it'll take to get one of the jobs.
"A lot of people sometimes think you can just show up at the door of a casino resort, raise your hand and say 'I need a job, please hire me,' " said Charlie Degliomini, Empire Resorts' executive vice president. "There are certain skills, certain life skills that you need to have. There are certain education requirements."
It was part of the district's Career Pathway event on Tuesday. It's aimed at helping students and their parents understand the different career opportunities in the area.
"I’ve taken plenty of different information on different career paths for our youth and different job opportunities," said Annette Foy, a Monticello High School parent.
"I think it’s good to have a plan for your future, so I needed some sort of ground work in order to do so, to see my options in order to expand upon them," said Rachel Rivera, a Monticello High School student.
The district hosted the event as a way to prepare students for life after high school, whether it be college or a career.
"We want to make sure our kiddos in Sullivan County and especially here at the Monticello Central School District understand what opportunities are available to them," said Tammy Mangus, Monticello School District's superintendent.
For those interested in a career at Montreign, officials say the opportunities are endless with the right training and requirements, which will be provided by the casino.
"There are IT jobs, there’s technical jobs, there’s marketing jobs, there’s hospitality," Degliomini said.
"I’ve been telling people, 'Look, this is a great opportunity and it’s coming our way, you guys need to get ready to take advantage of it,' " Foy said.
Montreign is expected to receive its casino license by the end of this year, with construction to be completed within two years.
