  • The loop is designed to handle at least 90,000 cars per day, according to the state Department of Transportation

  • A grand opening ceremony for the final section of the loop will take place at 11 a.m. Monday

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the planning phase for the 49-mile loop around Greensboro started in the late 1960s, and construction began around 2000.

Division 7 division engineer Wright Archer said the loop represents a $1 billion investment and described the project as a “crown jewel.” He said the investment in infrastructure will help the city keep up with its growing population.

“As we’ve opened various sections of the loop, we’ve noticed traffic improving, the volumes going down inside Greensboro, inside the city limits,” Archer said.

According to NCDOT, the loop is designed to handle at least 90,000 cars per day.

Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said it will take pressure off of city roads.

“This will be a real economic generator for us. It will get people around the city, goods and individuals out to the airport and other highway infrastructure much quicker,” Vaughan said.

A grand opening ceremony for the final section of the loop will take place at 11 a.m. Monday. NCDOT said the final strech will open after the festivities conclude.
