COCOA, Fla. — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Cocoa after police shot and killed a man armed with a knife.

Officers with the Cocoa Police Department responded to Prospect Park around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a man attacking a woman with a knife, explained Police Chief Mike Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe says an officer shot and killed the man, calling the shooting a tragedy.

Members of the community however, were visibly frustrated Wednesday night as a crowd of people gathered near the scene and were yelling at officers after the shooting.

"We hope the community will stand behind our officers. This was a tragic event. Anytime someone loses their life, it’s a tragic event. For the community, for our officer, and for us," said Cantaloupe.

The woman who was attacked did suffer stab wounds, however, the extent of her injuries are unclear at this time.

The officer is on paid leaving pending the outcome of the investigation.

The names of the officer and the man who was shot and killed will eventually be released by police.
