Building on the digital fare payment system launched in January, Kauai Bus has introduced a new Account-Based Ticketing system powered by Masabi’s Justride open platform available through the Kauai Bus mobile app and the newly launched Holomua smartcard. This new phase will allow passengers to “tap and ride” for “a simpler, more flexible and cost-effective way to travel the island.”

What You Need To Know

  • Bus riders can choose to either download the Kauai Bus app or pick up a Holomua card to “tap and ride”

  • With the new ABT system, riders will not need to pre-purchase tickets or choose a fare in advance

  • Riders will be able to manage their transit accounts via the Kauai Bus app or an online portal where they can add funds and track usage

  • The upgrade is part of a wider plan to modernize Kauai’s public transit fare system, according to the county, benefiting residents and visitors while paving the way for future enhancements such as Open Payments

Bus riders can choose to either download the Kauai Bus app or pick up a Holomua card to “tap and ride.”

Scheduled to launch in late 2025, Open Payments will allow passengers to pay directly with contactless bank cards or mobile wallets.

With the new ABT system, riders will not need to pre-purchase tickets or choose a fare in advance. They can instead use the app or smartcard to tap and board — the system will automatically calculate and deduct the lowest applicable fare through fare capping.

The upgrade is part of a wider plan to modernize Kauai’s public transit fare system, according to the county, benefiting residents and visitors while paving the way for future enhancements such as Open Payments.

“This launch is a major step forward in our mission to make public transportation on Kauai easier, more accessible, and more modern,” said Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami in a release. “Mahalo to our team with the Kauai Bus and Masabi for launching this service for our community.”

Riders will be able to manage their transit accounts via the Kauai Bus app or an online portal where they can add funds and track usage. The ABT system “ensures that passengers always receive the best value for their trips” rated at:

  • Mainline Single Ride - $2 adult / $1 reduced fare
  • Day Pass - $5 adult / $2.50 reduced fare
  • Monthly Fare Cap - $50 adult / $25 reduced fare

The ABT system makes bus travel easier by reducing the need to carry cash or plan fares in advance. Riders who prefer to pay with cash can load funds onto their account at select retail locations or at the Kauai Bus office. The Holomua smartcard is useful for those without smartphones who still want to take advantage of digital fare benefits.

“We’re delighted to deepen our partnership with The Kauai Bus supporting the roll out Account-Based Ticketing and bringing smarter, more efficient payment options to riders,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi. “Kauai’s approach, starting with mobile ticketing and expanding to ABT, is a powerful example of how transit systems can evolve and transform fare collection in phases to deliver meaningful improvements for their communities.”
