Calling hours will be held Saturday for Robert Bornt, the Hoosick Falls fire chief and state Transportation Department supervisor who died last week when a motorist struck him in a work zone on Route 7 in Pittstown.

In addition to his highway maintenance supervisor job and work as fire chief, Bornt, 54, served as a member of the Hoosick Rescue Squad and CSEA regional union president. He coached softball and enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling, according to his obituary.

Bornt passed away May 30 in Albany Medical Center from injuries suffered in the Pittstown crash the day before, an incident DOT called a "work zone intrusion" and Gov. Kathy Hochul said was "nothing short of a senseless tragedy."

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene. No charges are known to have been filed.

Bornt resided on River Street in Hoosick Falls and graduated from Hoosick Falls Central School.

Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hoosick Armory. A firemen’s last call service follows at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Hoosick Falls Fire Station. Attendees are encouraged to park at the Hoosick Falls Central School parking lot and take a shuttle to the armory.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hoosick Falls Fire Department or Hoosick Rescue Squad through the Mahar Funeral Home in Hoosick Falls.
