Election Day for the June primary is over in New York City.

New Yorkers casted votes for mayor, public advocate and city comptroller, as well as City Council members and borough presidents. 

The Democratic race for mayor has not been called yet, as no candidate received more than 50% of the first-choice votes. However, Zohran Mamdani has a seven-point lead over Andrew Cuomo, according to the Associated Press. Mamdani has declared victory, and Cuomo has conceded the race. The city’s Board of Elections will officially determine a winner after running ranked-choice voting rounds on Tuesday, July 1.

Here’s a recap of what happened in some of the local races on election night. 

City Council races

According to The Associated Press, several of the races for City Council are too close to call and will need to go through ranked-choice voting:

  • Incumbent Christopher Marte is leading in the Democratic primary for City Council District 1 in Manhattan with 49.2%, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.
  • Harvey Epstein is leading the Democratic primary for City Council District 2 in Manhattan with 39.1%, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.
  • Virginia Maloney is leading the Democratic primary for City Coucnil District 4 in Manhattan with 26.8%, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.
  • Elsie Encarnacion is leading in the Democratic primary for City Council District 8 in the Bronx and Manhattan with 28.2%, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.
  • Justin Sanchez is leading the Democratic primary for City Council District 17 in the Bronx with 40.2%, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.
  • Shanel Thomas-Henry is leading the Democratic primary for City Council District 21 in Queens with 30.9%, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.
  • Ty Hankerson is leading the Democratic primary for City Council District 28 in Queens with 34.8%, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.
  • Phil Wong is leading the Democratic primary for City Council District 30 in Queens with 36.1%, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.
  • Incumbent Darlene Mealy is leading the Democratic primary for City Council District 41 in Brooklyn, with 90.74% of the expected vote in.

A winner was declared by the AP in four other City Council primaries: 

District 14 in the Bronx

  • Incumbent Pierina Sanchez is the projected Democratic winner City Council District 14 in the Bronx. According to the AP, with more than 80% of the expected vote in, Sanchez had 66.5% of votes, while Fernando Cabrera had 22.3% of votes and Bryan Vasquez had 10.8%. 

District 38 in Brooklyn

  • Incumbent Alexa Aviles is the projected Democratic primary winner for City Council District 38 in Brooklyn. According to the AP, with 94% of the expected vote in, Aviles had 71.5% of votes, while Ling Ye had 27.9% of votes.

District 48 in Brooklyn

  • Incumbent Inna Vernikov is the projected Republican primary winner for City Council District 48 in Brooklyn. According to the AP, with 93% of the expected vote in, Vernikov had 66% of votes, while Ari Kagan had 33.5% of votes.

District 51 on Staten Island

  • Incumbent Frank Morano is the projected Republican winner for City Council District 51 on Staten Island. According to the AP, with 90% of the expected vote in, Morano had 82.2%, Griffin Fossella had 9.2% and John Buthorn had 8.1%.

Other races

Two incumbent borough presidents - Vanessa Gibson in the Bronx and Antonio Reynoso in Brooklyn - are the winners of their respective Democratic primaries, Spectrum News projects.

In the Democratic primary for Manhattan borough president, Brad Hoylman-Sigal is in the lead with 48.8%, with 90% of the expected vote in, according to the AP.

In addition, incumbent Alvin Bragg is the winner of the Manhattan district attorney Democratic primary, The Associated Press projects.
