FAYETTEVILLE -- In 2015, The Fayetteville Police Department announced that an audit found that 333 rape kits were thrown away over the years to free up space in the evidence room.

At the time, the sitting police chief ordered all of those cases to be reopened to try and correct their mistake.

Now, a few years later, the Fayetteville Police Department says it's concluded the project and was able to notify nearly 80 percent of the victims.

The Rape Crisis Volunteers of Cumberland County assisted with locating some of those victims and were able to provide resources and services to those who wanted them.

"Having someone come back decades later and say, we didn't forget about you, we're here, and we're looking at your case," said Cumberland County Rape Crisis Volunteers Director Deanne Gerdes. "That really had a big impact on a lot of victims."

Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department's Special Victims Unit have made arrests in three of the victims' cases. Ninety percent of the cases are now closed.
