ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A new, specially-designed baseball field opens this weekend in Webster for kids and adults of all abilities.
The field, on 5-acres at the Ridge Park right next to town hall, happened because of the gift of time and money from all kinds of organizations and volunteers.
Ron Kampff is the President of Challenger Miracle Field, who brought along a few friends to show off the new field.
The park project is about barrier-free, safe and accessible play. The field is a rubberized-surface baseball diamond with wheelchair accessible dugouts to allow all players to take part in games year-round.
There are no raised obstacles, like bases that you would find on a typical baseball field. Bases and pitching mounds are painted onto the surface.
It's all ADA-compliant. The dugouts are large enough to accommodate wheelchairs and other apparatus. The base path, pitching and outfield fence distances are a bit shorter than a typical Little League field.
Future plans for the field include lights to allow for evening games.
Next up is the Play with Possibilities Playground adjacent to the field. Fundraising continues for that.
The ribbon cutting ceremony at Challenger Miracle Field is Saturday at 11 a.m.
